This list is for the community at Gonzaga law school who are involved with the Gonzaga Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild. We support progressive social movements in Spokane by coordinating between activists on the ground and volunteer attorneys.
The general e-mail for the chapter is GonzagaNLG@riseup.net. Please contact it with any questions.
To send an e-mail to all the members of the Gonzaga chapter, e-mail Gonzaga@NationalLawyersGuild.org.
NATIONAL LAWYERS GUILD NETWORK
The Guild's introductory publication for law students is the Disorientation Handbook.
The Guild has a scholarship for law student summer work. The application is available at www.nlg.org/law-students/fellowships and is usually due near the beginning of the spring semester.
Depending on the date, we'll try to organize to go to the Northwest Regional Conference for the Guild. The regional conferences happen in the spring. (The national conference happens in the fall.)
The Guild is a national bar association of progressive attorneys. If you plan on practicing law somewhere other than Spokane, then use the Guild network while you are a law student to make connections in the geographic area where you want to practice. You can find contact information for the regional representatives at www.nlg.org/members/professional-chapters or contact Jamie Munro in the national office at membership@nlg.org.
The Guild also has committees that focus on specific issues.
Finally, please consider officially joining the National Lawyers Guild by paying $15 student dues per year. See www.nlg.org/support-us/pay-dues. This is true especially if you are interested in the National Lawyers Guild beyond just the Gonzaga Chapter (e.g., networking).
Below are a collection of resources that you should become familiar with in order to assist progressive movements and do our work effectively. There is a lot of stuff here, so don't worry if it takes a while to read it all (maybe it is good winter break pleasure reading).
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
One way we support activists is by providing resources for folks to be better prepared to exercise their right to dissent. The following resources are helpful how-to guides:
www.aclu-wa.org/rights-with-police
This is a very short summary that everyone should know.
www.aclu-wa.org/street-speech
Helpful primer on free speech rights.
www.nlg.org/resources/know-your-rights/
More extensive discussion of the right to dissent.
ssd.eff.org
In-depth guide to protecting yourself from surveillance by the government, focusing on electronic communication.
Also, check out the book "Hell No: Your Right to Dissent in 21st Century America" (2011) for a summary of government suppression of the right to dissent over the last ten years. The Spokane Public Library has this book.
The website anonlg.com is a collection of Know-Your-Rights materials specifically for hackers targeted by the government for their political protest. This page links to most of the above National Lawyers Guild resources, as well as a few other publications.
We can coordinate with local attorneys to provide a Know Your Rights workshop for groups that want it. Many of the skills described in the resources above are learned best through experiential education.
LEGAL OBSERVING
As of spring 2012, we are working on setting up a legal observer program. Read the Legal Observer Manual, available by a link at www.nlg.org/resources/legal-observing, but remember you need a formal training before doing legal observer work.
LEGAL NEWS: LOCAL AND BEYOND
The National Lawyers Guild radio show Law and Disorder is broadcast on KYRS, 88.1 or 92.3 FM.
KYRS also produces Democracy Matters, which focuses on legal structural change for democracy and against corporate rights.
Search KYRS' schedule for showtimes.
KYRS also plays Democracy Now! and has a thirty minute KYRS Local News program. Both of these news programs often cover legal developments.
Please sign up for Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane's (PJALS) e-mail list. PJALS is a hub of progressive organizing in Spokane, and its list is a good way to hear what is going on.
